How Cribs for Kids Understands Its Impact 150 150 Cribs for Kids

Preventing Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) is a complex public health issue influenced by caregiver education, healthcare access, social determinants of health, public policy, and community resources. Because national and state mortality data are typically released several years after collection, it is difficult to attribute changes in SUID rates to any single intervention.

What We Track
Cribs for Kids primarily measures program reach and utilization. We monitor:

  • Geographic distribution of partner organizations and the populations they serve
  • Participation in educational and community-based programs
  • Distribution of safe sleep environments and educational materials

Since 1998, Cribs for Kids has:

  • Distributed more than one million safe sleep environments
  • Partnered with over 2,000 organizations nationwide
  • Certified more than 500 hospitals through the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program
  • Trained more than 100,000 individuals through the Safe Sleep Ambassador program

Partner-Informed Tools and Training
Cribs for Kids collaborates with hospitals, health departments, and community organizations to develop practical, evidence-informed tools that support frontline work. Examples include:

  • “Safe or Not Safe?” photo quiz, which helps caregivers and professionals identify unsafe sleep environments
  • Professional training series that promotes consistent safe sleep education; participants report an average satisfaction rating of 4.9 out of 5

Convening Experts and Advocates
Cribs for Kids tracks emerging trends and convenes stakeholders at local, state, and national levels through the National Cribs for Kids Conference and other forums. Participants include clinicians, researchers, public health professionals, healthcare leaders, community organizations, and parent advocates. These convenings support the exchange of data, lessons learned, and promising practices.

Strengthening Evaluation
Beginning in 2027, Cribs for Kids will expand evaluation efforts to assess changes in knowledge and intended or reported behavior following participation in educational programs. The organization remains committed to advancing evidence-based safe sleep education and strengthening how impact is measured and communicated.
