Cribs for Kids is a national nonprofit organization, founded in Allegheny County, that focuses on reducing the number of babies dying due to unsafe sleep. In the United States, each year we see about 3,500 babies dying to unsafe sleeping environments. Many of these babies are dying in bed with their parents or siblings. This is why we know that babies sleep safest Alone, on their Back, in a safety approved Crib.
Below we have listed our resources that are available to you through our organization as an Allegheny County resident.
Safe Sleep Education
The Safe Sleep Academy was developed by the Cribs for Kids® National Infant Safe Sleep Initiative. The Safe Sleep Academy is our free online educational resource for parents and caregivers.
Visit www.safesleepacademy.org for everything you need to know to create a safe and healthy home for your baby.
The Safe Sleep Ambassador Program was developed to help us spread the safe sleep message by providing an online safe sleep educational training.
Have anyone caring for your baby take this training so that they know how to keep your baby sleeping safely.
Request a Crib
The Cribs for Kids program is in all birthing hospitals in Allegheny County, PA. Here is how to access the in-hospital program:
- After you deliver your baby, you will be asked to watch our safe sleep educational video.
- A nurse will then ask you to complete a form acknowledging that you received the education.
- You will be asked if you have a safe place for your baby to sleep. In the rare case a nurse does not directly ask you, please ask them about the program.
- If you do not have a safe place for your baby to sleep, a portable crib will be given to you before you leave the hospital.
If, for some reason, you left the hospital and did not have a safe sleeping environment for your baby, please visit our Find a Crib map. Type in your zip code to find the Cribs for Kids partner closest to you.
