Hospital Certification Toolkit

Guide to Certification

ALL LEVELS

This 10-step guide is a snapshot of the process to achieve National Infant Safe Sleep Certification.  This general reference is supported by the detailed information within this Hospital Certification Tool Kit.

Narrative Requirements

ALL LEVELS

Hospitals applying for certification are required to submit a brief narrative document.  The narrative should outline the care of patients less than one-year-old as it relates to infant safe sleep, detailing how hospital personnel implements safe sleep policies and practices. The narrative submission is an opportunity for the hospital to highlight its infant safe sleep efforts and accomplishments, including collaborative endeavors.

If the application is for a hospital system, each hospital must have its own narrative content with each narrative combined into a single system-wide document for submission

Infant Safe Sleep Policy

ALL LEVELS

The Infant Safe Sleep Policy is the cornerstone of the Hospital Certification process.

Hospitals seeking certification must have an infant safe sleep policy in force for a minimum of three months.

To facilitate the development of a new policy, or to assist in the evaluation of your hospital’s current policy, Cribs for Kids:

  • Provides sample policies of successfully certified hospitals
  • List of required policy element to ensure the submitted policy meets certification standards

Once you review sample policies and required policy elements, should you have any questions or concerns, contact hospitalcertification@cribsforkids.org with those questions or to schedule a conference call.

Note: We are not able to review policies prior to certification submission.

Photography Guidelines

ALL LEVELS

Our certified hospitals set the standard for infant safe sleep care via training, education, and modeling.  As such, Infant Safe Sleep Certified Hospitals are required to display images that meet AAP recommendations.  Safe Sleep images and photos include those used to decorate the units, used in collateral marketing materials and mass media messages, as well as social media posts.

This document provides the Dos and Don’ts of safe sleep images

Safe Sleep Pictures

To support hospitals in their portrayal of infant safe sleep, Cribs for Kids provides the following images that depict infant safe sleep. These images are provided at no charge and may be used in both print and electronic collateral materials.

Safe Sleep Compliance

SILVER & GOLD

Certified hospitals at all levels must address infant safe sleep education and compliance by family/caregivers.

Certified hospitals at the silver and gold levels must demonstrate safe sleep compliance by their healthcare personnel via unit audits.

Hospitals can choose to design their own documents and/or processes to meet these requirements or may choose to use or edit the documents provided here.

Infant Safe Sleep Products

SILVER & GOLD

Silver and Gold certified hospitals using wearable blankets, and Gold certified hospitals providing safe infant sleep spaces must ensure the products used meet safety standards set by the CPSC, ASTM, and JPMA.

Cribs for Kids is proud to provide a line of safe sleep product solutions. Here are safe sleep products that you can order to support your Infant Safe Sleep Certification.
